Climate change has become a matter of deep global concern, with significant impacts on flood intensity in many parts of the world. The increase in global temperatures due to the warming of the earth affects weather patterns and hydrological systems, causing an increase in the frequency and intensity of flood events. One of the key factors contributing to the increased risk of flooding is melting polar ice caps. Melting ice causes sea levels to rise, resulting in more frequent coastal flooding. Data from the IPCC shows that sea levels have risen by around 20 cm since 1900, and are expected to continue to rise, posing a threat to communities in coastal areas. Rainfall patterns have also changed drastically due to climate change. Previously dry areas may experience sudden heavy rains, while normally wet areas may experience drought. Communities unprepared for extreme rainfall often find themselves caught up in disasters. In many countries, drainage infrastructure is not designed to handle the new intensity of rain, which also exacerbates the risk of flooding. Warmer atmospheric conditions also increase the ability to store water vapor. This phenomenon, known as the “Clausius-Clapeyron law”, states that for every one degree Celsius rise, the air can hold about 7% more water vapor. This causes an intensification of rain which leads to flooding when it rains. Countries such as India and the United States have seen a surge in the number of storms and heavy rains that have caused flooding, shaking up the lives of many people. From an environmental perspective, floods affect ecosystems by destroying natural habitats. Increasingly frequent flooding events are also causing changes in species distribution, affecting biodiversity. Plants and animals that cannot adapt to these changes risk extinction, exacerbating ecosystem damage. Social and economic aspects are also not immune from the impact of increasingly intense flooding. People who are below the poverty line feel the worst effects. In many cases, they lost property, jobs, and access to basic services such as education and health. Recovery costs from more severe flooding in developing countries could reach billions of dollars, complicating efforts to eradicate poverty. Uncertainty related to climate change requires governments and international organizations to improve disaster preparedness. Investments in green infrastructure and environmentally friendly technologies can help reduce the impact of flooding. Early warning systems and community education programs are also important to build resilience in the face of these increasingly risky disasters. Thus, climate change not only has an impact on climate change itself, but also has serious consequences for the intensity and frequency of floods throughout the world. Proactive responses and mitigation must be a priority to protect communities and ecosystems from the increasing potential threats caused by climate change.
